Bio:
Dr. Sara Mayes is a Seattle native with degrees from both the University of Washington and Washington State University. She and her husband Mirko started Snake Haus, an animal rescue that specializes in large snakes in Snohomish, WA and achieved 501(c)(3) exemption status in 2018. Dr. Mayes also works full time as a small animal Veterinarian for dogs and cats in Monroe, WA. She has extensive experience working with numerous types of animals including wildlife, exotics, and more traditional pets like dogs and cats.
The Snake Haus team consists of two veterinarians, a licensed veterinary technician, and a few other dedicated volunteers, whose goal is to spread awareness and appreciation for a group of pet animals that are historically misunderstood and neglected. Pet snakes are quite fragile and desperately need more animal advocates throughout our community.
This course will include identification of the most common pet snakes with live examples, typical behavior, common illnesses and injuries with special notes on when intervention might be needed, captive care and husbandry, as well as safe capture and handling techniques. Dr. Mayes is able to discuss other topics and animal types so feel free to ask questions and even request other topics ahead of time!
